ATLANTA — Three of Atlanta’s major highways were shut down due to a series of crashes on one of the biggest travel days of the year Sunday morning.

Around 4 a.m., a wreck involving four vehicles shut down all lanes of I-85 NB at Hwy. 316 in Gwinnett County. Traffic was diverted for several hours. Lanes have since reopened.
Around 6:30, a vehicle fire shut down all lanes of I-20 EB at MLK Jr. Dr. in Atlanta.
Another crash around 7 a.m. shut down all lanes of I-285 at Lavista Rd. in DeKalb County.
It’s unclear if anyone was injured in any of the crashes.

The weekend before Thanksgiving is a busy period for travel. Last year, almost as many Americans traveled by car during Thanksgiving as before the pandemic.
AAA predicts 1.6 million people in Georgia will travel this Thanksgiving. Nationally, AAA expects 49.2 people to travel by car over the holidays.
