Thursday, May 13

COFFEE CLUB — The Poway Chamber of Commerce’s Coffee Club morning mixer will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. Thursday, May 13. The location has not been announced. Attendance is free for chamber members. Non-members can attend one free mixer, after that they are $25. Register at poway.com.

PUSD BOARD MEETING — The Poway Unified School District Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 13. The meeting is closed to the public due to COVID-19 restrictions, but can be viewed online. Saturday, May 15

HYGIENE ITEMS NEEDED — Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church is collecting hygiene items needed for the 1,400 migrant girls being sheltered at the San Diego Convention Center. Bring hygiene products for girls ages 13 to 17 from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 15. Needed are travel size and regular size bottles (not family size) of shampoo, conditioner, bar or gel soap, face cream, brushes, combs, toothpaste, toothbrushes, acne care creams, monthly sanitary products, body lotions, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, hair twisties/scrunchies and hand cream. Bring to the church’s upper parking lot, 17010 Pomerado Road in RB. Items will be collected by volunteers from vehicles.

AAUW FUNDRAISER — The Poway-Penasquitos branch of the American Association of University Women is holding a fundraiser at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 15 via Zoom. Authors Louise Penny and Lisa See will speak. The event will raise money for scholarships for women reentering college. Tickets are $25, registration closes May 10. ELEANOR ROOSEVELT — Professor Blaine Davies will talk about the United States’ first “feminist” first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 18. RB AAUW — Dr. Ellen E. Lee, assistant professor of psychiatry at UC San Diego, will talk about sleep related to seniors during the 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 18 Rancho Bernardo branch of American Association of University Women meeting. MENTAL HEALTH — The Poway Chamber of Commerce will hold its weekly mental health meeting from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 19 via Zoom. The meeting is an open forum meant to provide a safe space for anyone to talk about mental health issues and concerns. It also provides resources to those who need them. Attendance is free. WOMENPROS PLUS — The Poway Chamber of Commerce’s WomenPros Plus networking group will meet from 11:30 to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 20 on the veranda patio of the Rancho Bernardo Inn, 17550 Bernardo Oaks Drive. GOP WOMEN — Sandy Lehmkuhler, founder and president of Warrior Foundation-Freedom Station, will speak at the 10 a.m. Friday, May 21 Rancho Bernardo Republican Women Federated luncheon. CAMPING — The City of Poway is holding a spring camping event from 6 a.m. Friday, May 21 to 9 a.m. Saturday, May 22 at Lake Poway, 14644 Lake Poway Road. This event is open to non-Poway residents as well. Hike, fish and enjoy the beauty of Lake Poway. Fishing permit is not included with event but may be purchased at an additional cost. Saturday, May 22

FREE RECYCLING, SHREDDING — The City of Poway is holding a free document shredding, electronic waste drop-off and mulch event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 22 for Poway residents. Proof of residency is required. It will be held at 12325 Crosthwaite Circle in Poway. Shredding is limited to two bankers boxes (10 inches by 12 inches by 15 inches). Documents should be free of paper clips and other metal. Mulch will be available for self-load/self-haul, so bring a shovel. Accepted electronics include TVs, computer monitors, printers, fax machines and VCRs.

DEMS TO MEET — Dave Myers, a retired San Diego County Sheriff’s Department commander, will talk about excessive deaths in county jails during the 7 p.m. Monday, May 24 Rancho Bernardo Democratic Club meeting. It will be held virtually via Zoom. Marcia Finney will also speak about the unaccompanied migrant children being housed at the San Diego Convention Center.
